Whether you’ve just moved to Los Cabos or are spending your first season exploring the streets of Baja California Sur, one thing’s for sure: parking can be confusing. The curbside color system may look decorative, but ignore it… and you could end up with a fine—or worse, a towed car.
We’ve made it easy. Here’s your quick guide to what the painted curbs actually mean in Baja Sur.
🟢 Green:
Private Business Use
This space is not public parking, even if it seems tempting. Businesses pay the municipality to reserve this area for their clients. You might not see a sign, but parking here could earn you a ticket—or an unfriendly conversation with a shop owner.
🟡 Yellow:
Reserved for Public Transport
Buses and taxis only! This is one of the most heavily enforced colors. Even quick stops can lead to hefty fines. If you’re not driving a taxi or a colectivo, steer clear.
🔴 Red:
No Parking
This one’s obvious—don’t park here. Red curbs often appear at corners or tight turns in downtown areas. Delivery trucks and emergency vehicles need the space to maneuver. Parking here could not only cost you money but also damage your car.
⚪ White:
Public Parking
Good news—you’re clear to park here. These spots are designated for general use. Just check for time limits or signage, especially in busy areas.
🔵 Blue:
Handicap Parking Only
Strictly enforced. Even if you’re elderly or pregnant, you need an official permit unless the spot states otherwise. Fines can go up to $350 USD, and it’s one of the easiest ways to ruin your day.
Final Tip: When in Doubt, Walk It Out
If you’re unsure whether parking is allowed, look for signage or ask a local. And when exploring San José or Cabo’s downtown areas, it’s often easier—and less stressful—to park a few blocks away and enjoy a short walk.
Welcome to driving in Baja Sur! And remember, smart parking = no fines and more tacos.
